Topic: The Illinois Pet Trusts Act: How Can I Provide For My Pet When I'm Gone

A primary objective of many estate plans is providing care for loved ones who are financially dependent.  Pets are increasingly becoming a beloved member of the family and owners are increasingly looking to provide for their pets in the case of the owner’s death.  In response, the Illinois Pet Trust Act (760 ILCS 5/15.2) became effective on January 1, 2005.  This seminar will explore the statute and basic planning with a pet trust.  Further, the seminar will explore the practical pitfalls of pet trusts and alternative planning for common pets.
