Thousands of Illinois families will face eviction due to COVID-19!

The Bad News: COVID-19 is wreaking havoc on our public health and the economy. In Illinois, over 1 million people are unemployed and hundreds of thousands are unable to pay rent. An eviction crisis is looming. One study estimates that 441,000 evictions will be filed in Illinois following the end of the moratorium. When families face eviction, they are at a higher risk of homelessness, poverty, family separation, adverse health outcomes, and poor educational outcomes for children.

But here’s the good news…YOU can help!

Tenants facing eviction need quality legal advice to maximize their chances of remaining in their homes. Therefore, Prairie State Legal Services is seeking attorneys for our Pandemic Pro Bono Eviction Project. As a pro bono attorney, you will:

• advise families about their rights and available rental assistance programs
• empower families to enter into agreements to help them keep their housing

We will provide volunteers with training and ongoing support, as well as malpractice coverage. Also, Prairie State screens clients for financial eligibility.
This is your chance to have a lasting effect on your community.

Sign up to volunteer today!

As part of the project, we will be holding a mandatory training on Thursday, August 20 from 3-4:45PM to prepare you for this work. (1.5 MCLE credit, including .75 professionalism (applied for)).
