Immune to Your Consultations: Guiding Older Clients As They Transition Out of Care

Youth exiting the foster care system must have the autonomy to make decisions about
their future, even if the professionals around them believe their choices are misguided. When this
happens, the attorney and other professionals can support the client when inevitable bumps in the
road occur. Children in care often learn that the only way to be heard is to scream. They learn
that polite, quiet kids get lost in the bureaucracy of the system. However, these learned
dysfunctional behaviors lead to many youth in care being labeled as mentally ill. Often, a youth’s
behaviors are borne of frustration, not mental illness. Our workshop will provide concrete
strategies to advocate effectively for older clients, particularly those who have spent time placed
in aggregate care or who have been diagnosed with a mental or emotional disorder.

This workshop will provide concrete strategies to empower and advocate for youth in
care. The format of our workshop is a 60 minute presentation incorporating guided discussion,
including the use of hypothetical case scenarios.

Time: 11:45 am to 1:00 pm

Location: Attorney Resource Center (Third Floor of the DuPage County Courthouse)
