Title of Presentation: The Evolution of Reed v. Town of Gilbert: Stare Decisis as an Explosive Device

 

Topic: Jim & Sarah will revisit the Supreme Court's ruling in Reed v. Town of Gilbert, 135 S. Ct. 2218 (2015) and its evolving impact on other First Amendment doctrines and various types of ordinances affecting First Amendment rights. The program will also discuss the treatment of commercial versus non-commercial speech and the developing area of "government speech". 

 

What You Will Learn By Attending This Presentation:

 

1. Attendees will have the opportunity to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the First Amendment principles articulated in Reed v. The Town of Gilbert, Arizona, a seminal case.  

 

2. Attendees will learn how Reed's ruling does or does not apply to pre-existing First Amendment jurisprudence.   

 

3. Attendees will participate in a discussion of strategies directed at controlling the underlying issues further defining content neutral speech; and municipal control without violating First Amendment precedents.
