Speakers: Hon. Bonnie Wheaton, Mary Andreoni - Ethics Counsel for the ARDC, & John O'Reilly

Topic: Civility in the Courtroom


Presentation Summary:

Mary will speak on the meaning of civility, how the legal profession views incivility in the legal profession, the rules of professional conduct that address civility, suggestions on how to address uncivil conduct, the incivility complaints brought to the ARDC, and lawyers disciplined as a result of incivility.

John will discuss how attendees should speak to and treat pro se litigants, how to interact with bench, clerks, and other courthouse staff, and how to interact with opposing counsel in the courtroom during hearings.

What you will learn by attending this presentation:

1.  Increase the lawyer's understanding of what civility means and suggestions on how to deal with incivility

2.  Increase the lawyer's knowledge of the rules of professional conduct that govern civil conduct

3. Suggestions on how to deal with incivility consistent with lawyer's ethics obligations

4.  Increase the lawyer's understanding that civility is a strength, not a weakness

5.  Tips for being civil in the courtroom

6.  Impact of civility of judge or jurors and the opposite impact of incivility

7.  Civility toward pro se litigants and benefit toward client and justice system
