TItle: What would Lincoln want to know about a human embryo?


Topic: This presentation will familiarize attorneys with the scientific facts about the human embryo as revealed in laws, case law and current scientific publications. We will discuss the legal status of the embryo as property/special respect/person.


Learning Objectives:

1.) An introduction to the understanding of the scientific factual information at the time statutes and laws were passed regarding legal status of human embryos compared to facts known today.


2.) A review of prior case law and statutes in Illinois that involve consideration of embryonic fate.


3.) A discussion of the three legal status theories of property, special respect and personhood for human embryo and how the legal status affects treatment.


4.) References provided to obtain information on current human embryonic development facts and resources for third party treatment of embryos.
