Date: Thursday, February 1, 2018

Topic: Local and federal  special education case law updates & recent legislation changes

Speaker: Rupa Ramadurai

Rupa Ramadurai graduated from the University of Michigan, in 2009 with a B.A. in Political Science and English. Rupa left Michigan to matriculate into the 2009 corps for Teach for America Miami-Dade County, where she taught high school intensive reading for two years. After completing the corps, Rupa went on to attend Loyola University School of Law, and was a Child & Family Law Fellow within their Civitas Child Law program, with a particular interest in Education Law & Policy.

She then graduated in May of 2014 and began her career at the law firm of Hodges, Loizzi, Eisenhammer, Rodick, & Kohn (HLERK) in September of 2014 where she practiced in several areas of school law, such as student discipline, labor personnel, board governance, FOIA and Open Meetings Act work. Rupa left HLERK in October of 2015 to join the General Counsel’s office at the Illinois State Board of Education. In her current role as Assistant General Counsel, Rupa supports the Special Education Services division, and also does some discipline, transgender, charter, and foster care work.

In recent months, Rupa has expanded her professional network and is an active member of the Education Law Committee for the Illinois State Bar Association, and serves as a Co-Chair on the Chicago Bar Association's Education Law Committee.  In her spare time she volunteers with several organizations dedicated to supporting low-income and disadvantaged youth, such as the Dreams for Kids Associate Board and serves as the Director of the Sophomore Program for Minds Matter in the Chicagoland area.
