William E. Black of Downers Grove receives DuPage Bar Award for Outstanding Legal Service

WHEATON, Ill. - The DuPage County Bar Association presented Judge William E. Black of Downers Grove with its Ralph A. Gabric Award for outstanding legal service.

"Bill Black served as a mentor to numerous DuPage attorneys as while he served as an 18th Judicial Circuit Judge," said Keith E. (Chuck) Roberts, Jr., outgoing DCBA President. "Judge Black was a prolific contributor to the DCBA Brief magazine, and a frequent speaker at our educational seminars. He consistently received exemplary ratings in Bar polls. He was known not only for his legal acumen, but for his patience, civility and good humor."

The annual award, named in memory of the late Ralph A. Gabric, Past President of the DuPage County Bar Association and Illinois State Bar Association, is presented to DCBA member attorneys in recognition of distinguished service to the organization and legal community.
Judge Black engaged in the general practice of law for fourteen years. He began his career as an adjuster at Allstate Insurance, then later joined the law firm of Corrigan, Quetsch & O'Reilly in Wheaton. He started his judicial career as a magistrate in 1971. He served as a judicial officer in every division of the 18th Judicial Circuit. He was appointed as Circuit Judge in 1984, and retired in 1995 as Presiding Judge of the Law Division.

Black received both his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Illinois, and was admitted to practice law in Illinois in 1957.
