Clifford M. Carney of Downers Grove named "Lawyer of the Year" by the DuPage Bar Association

WHEATON, Illinois - The DuPage County Bar Association presented Clifford M. Carney of Downers Grove with its "Lawyer of the Year" award on June 7 in recognition of his many years of distinguished leadership and meritorious service to the bar and legal community.

"Cliff Carney generously demonstrated his appreciation and recognition for what the DuPage County Bar Association meant to him during his long legal career in DuPage County," said Neal W. Cerne, outgoing President of the DCBA. "His unique gift is intended to honor his friend and mentor, Judge William Hooper (1889-1979), and to benefit all lawyers who practice in DuPage County. It will help lawyers to remember, and to promote a time when collegiality, honor and integrity were paramount."

Clifford Carney has been a partner in the Downers Grove firm of Hooper, Bowers, Calkins & Carney since 1956. He served as president of the DuPage County Bar Association in 1972-1973, and as a member of the Illinois State Bar Association Assembly from 1975 to 1981. He was general counsel for both the International Association of Clerks, Recorders, Election Officials and Treasurers, and the Illinois Association of Clerks and Recorders. He chaired the DuPage County Board of Election Commissioners from 1978 to 1994, and has provided legal counsel for many municipalities and taxing districts.

Carney is a graduate of Michigan State University and the University of Illinois College of Law, and was admitted to practice law in Illinois in 1952. He and his wife, Bette Carney, have established an endowed chair at the U. of I. College of Law to benefit faculty scholarship efforts.
