Laurie Bullock of Safe Harbor Receives DuPage Bar's Liberty Bell Award

Presented annually to non-attorney for efforts to support the law, improve justice system

WHEATON, Ill. - Laurie Bullock of Elmhurst received DuPage County Bar Association's 2008 Liberty Bell Award at the May 2 Law Day Luncheon at Klein Creek Golf Club. Bullock is executive director of Safe Harbor, the Children's waiting room at the DuPage Judicial Center.
DuPage County State's Attorney Joseph E. Birkett provided the keynote address at this luncheon, exploring the meaning of the rule of law. This is the 50th anniversary of Law Day U.S.A., established in 1958 by presidential proclamation and reaffirmed by joint resolution in Congress in 1991 as a "special day of celebration by the American people in appreciation of their liberties and to provide an occasion for rededication of the ideals of equity and justice under the laws."

Laurie Bullock has been the only executive director of Safe Harbor since it opened in 1997. During the initial planning stages in 1996, Laurie compiled the numerous forms and procedures used in admitting and discharging children, in English and in Spanish to accommodate the diversity of the citizens of DuPage County. She trains and volunteers the 7-15 volunteers used at any time so they can react promptly and appropriately to any situation.

"Laurie's personal outreach to the community has promoted a greater understanding of, and respect for, the judicial system and the role of the individual in furthering the goals of improving society by nurturing our youngest members," report members of the Child Friendly Court Foundation Angela Imbierowicz, Irene Bahr, James Reichardt and Brenda Carroll. "Laurie stimulates a deep sense of individual responsibility by requiring the parents/guardians of the children to recognize their duties to their children by conforming their conduct to the rules of Safe Harbor, all of which certainly contributes to the effective functioning of the courthouse."

The DCBA presents its Liberty Bell Award annually to a non-lawyer for contributions to the law in observance of Law Day. Previous recipients include Patt Rexroad of the Illinois State Bar Association, Cathy Terrill of the Ray Graham Association for People with Disabilities, and Rick Arndt and Kay Hedeen of CASA of DuPage.
