Emotional Intelligence in Practicing Attorneys-Thesis Research

February 14, 2013

DCBA Member, Steven Lindberg, needs you input for his thesis research.  See below:

I am currently in the process of writing my thesis the title of which is Emotional Intelligence in Practicing Attorneys.  My abstract statement is:

This study focuses on the level of emotional intelligence in practicing attorneys. The survey respondents will all be practicing attorneys. The study will review twelve primary areas of practice as well as the age of the attorney, the gender of the attorney and the number of years the attorney has been practicing. The study is a quantitative in nature and will use survey tool to track the independent variables and will use the MSCEIT assessment tool to measure emotional intelligence.

The purpose of my research is as follows:

This research seeks to delve further into the level(s) of emotional intelligence in practicing attorneys.  More specifically, what level of emotional intelligence does an attorney have when primarily practicing a certain area of the law?  The results of this study will enable law students, law schools, and lawyers to better align the area of law that is being practiced with the trait(s) that the attorney possesses.  Further, if an attorney (or law student) does not possess the “right” level of emotional intelligence, as shown by this survey for a particular area of law, then the individual can improve his/her emotional intelligence.  (Cherniss, Grimm, & Liataud, 2010). There are programs and exercises which allow individuals to work on improving their emotional intelligence. An example of one such book is, “The Emotional Intelligence Activity Book” by Adele B. Lynn. (Lynn, 2002)

I am now at the stage where I need to collect data and I would like your assistance.  I need attorney respondents to my survey on demographics as well as the MSCEIT assessment.  The areas of law that I need surveyed are: a) Litigation Practice, b) Corporate/Business/Commercial, c) Torts/Insurance, d) Real Estate, e) Tax, Trusts, Estates, f) General Practice, g) Patent/Trademark/Copyright, h) Matrimonial/Family Law i) Criminal, j) Labor, k) Public Interest, l) Other.  Given the number of independent variables that I would like to analyze, I need approximately three hundred respondents.

I would really like it if you can complete my surveys and also forward this email with a request to your colleagues so that they can complete the surveys.  I can have multiple respondents from the same office so pass it around the water cooler!

If you complete the surveys (2) you will get an Executive Summary of the research as well as your scored MSCEIT assessment.

The two surveys will take a combined time of approximately one hour.

The second survey link is included in the above survey.  (Hope that this makes sense)

In case you are interested here is the link to the second survey:

I would appreciate your help.  If you need further information about the nature of the research, I would be more than happy to answer your questions.  My cell phone number is 630-989-3392.
