The St. Thomas More Society of DuPage county will hold its annual Red Mass on Sunday, Oct. 30 at noon at St. Michael Church (315 West Illinois, Wheaton).
The Red Mass is a traditional ceremony that dates back to the Thirteenth Century in Europe and introduced in the United States in 1928. The ceremony will include prayer for civic leaders, religious leaders, servants of the law, and others to more effectively achieve a just and free society. Attendees are asked to wear something red because according to the society’s announcement, “The celebrants process into the church clothed in red vestments, together with politicians, lawyers and judges, signifying the fire of God’s spiritual guidance to all who pursue justice in their daily lives.” The ceremony is traditionally attended by judges, lawyers, and politicians of all faiths, and includes a retaking of your professional oath. A free light brunch for members of the legal community will be served after the ceremony. The event is free to attend and donations to offset costs are welcome.
