Wheaton, Illinois -- Eddie Wollenberg, retired DCBA Executive Director, received the DuPage County Bar Association's 2011 Liberty Bell Award at the May 4th Law Day Luncheon at Cantigny Golf Club. Wollenberg was nominated by DCBA Past President Kent Gaertner.

Justice William J. Bauer, US Court of Appeals, 7th District, provided the keynote address at the luncheon.  Law Day U.S.A. was established in 1958 for presidential proclamation and reaffirmed by joint resolution in Congress in 1991 as a "special day of celebration by the American People in appreciation of their liberties and to provide an occasion for rededication of the ideals of equity and justice under the laws."

Wollenberg retired as DCBA Executive Director in 2001, a position she held for 18 years.  She believed that community involvement is vital to the success of legal professionals.  Wollengberg maintains there is no better way to enhance the image of the profession than by attorneys participating in pro bono and community service endeavors.

In 2000, Wollenberg along with Judge Paul Marchese founded "Lawyers Lending a Hand" a monthly service project.  Ten years after her retirement from th DCBA, Gaertner states that Eddie "continues to tirelessly organize the monthly projects.  Lawyers, family members, and friends volunteer for such activities as serving hotdogs to residents of housing projects, organizing food pantries and resale shops, painting local agency offices, cleaning at Animal Control, and more.  The most popular project Eddie organizes is the annual November Coat Drive, where in excess of 2,000 warm coats and jackets are distributed to various DuPage agencies."

The DCBA presents its Liberty Bell Award annually to a non-lawyer for contributions to the law in observance of Law Day.  Previous recipients include Robert Craghead of the ISBA, Sheila Murphy-Russell of the Family Center, and Laurie Bullock of Safe Harbor.

About the DCBA The DuPage County Bar Association, founded in 1879, represents over 2,200 member attorneys dedicated to advancing the practice of law and promoting the legal profession through community service and education.
