New Lawyer Division CLE - Practice Ready

Evolving Trial Technology and Jury Selection Strategies also known as Understanding Generational Differences in Perception with Your Clients, Colleagues and at Trial.

Date:May 3, 2017

Time: 11:45 lunch, 12:00 Presentation

Speaker: Doug Blanchard, Jensen Litigation

Summary:

For the first time in history there are five generations in the workplace, each with their own unique communication style.  Clear communication, and understanding perceptual differences within each generation is vital.  It is important to understand that it is not what is said, but what is heard.

This course will review the different styles and how that impacts communication with clients, colleagues and especially during a trial.

This CLE will also focus on the evolving use of technology in the courtroom and the impact of more sophisticated demonstratives on juries and judges.  Generational differences in perception and expectations will also be explored in regards to effective trial presentations.  Strategies for using mock juries and how to effectively select sympathetic jurors from the available jury pool will be reviewed.

Topics covered will include:

Trends in Courtroom Technology
               • Evolution of trial technology
               • Presentation software packages and programs
               • Jury expectations, i.e. the “CSI effect”

Compare and Contrast Presentation Technology
               • How to address generational differences in perception
               • Information overload concerns, i.e. “short attention-span theater”
               • Big Data issues – keeping information manageable for juries

Crafting Your Trial Presentation with New Technology Applications
               • Cost containment vs. best use of available technology (presentation ROI)
               • More efficient trial preparation using project management principles
               • Use of software programs to organize and present case

The Fundamentals of Voir Dire and Jury Selection.
              • Insights into jury decision making and jury psychology across four generations
              • What works and what doesn’t when selecting a jury
              • Learning from deliberations
